Loving the material

Let me start with this.  It doesn't matter how good or how bad the script, you have to make sense of it.  You have to love it.  Love that material, and do not judge the material.  If there are holes in the story, fix them.  If you do not like the writing, then you are giving yourself excuses.  Don't do the work if you don't want to; but if you are going to take the job, then you owe it to everyone working on the film to bring your A-game.  When it comes on screen no one says, "Wow, the writer must have sucked."  They say, "Wow that actor sucks."  Being a professional is what gets you more work.  When people realize you come prepared and are easy to work with, then they will want to work with you again.  I can't tell you how many times I get recommended to projects from working with someone before.  Don't think for a second that you are irreplaceable.  If you do not take your job serious enough, then someone else will.

Acting is life; and I am sorry to say, but your life is not predetermined. The most random things happen in any given day or second that we cannot explain.  We do not know how we are going to react and live until it happens.  If we sit and think about how we are going to react and feel, then we block ourselves from enjoying that freedom of living in the moment.  Getting the words right every time is great; but if you're not living in the moment and just happen to be getting them right, you're not living yet.   For film, for the most part, we forget all together that there is a camera and audience.  We do not try to please the audience, we just live each second like it is the first time ever.  The script has so much room for choices.  Just make sure you make them.  Then make them real.  Let the choices come from the guidelines and the facts in the script.  Let memorizing the lines be the last thing that you do.   I am going to stress this one more time though - No matter how good or bad the script, you have to LOVE the material.  When you love the material, then you will take your craft to the next level.
